Leading a Boring Life?

Here is a thought-provoking blog by Vinita Nangia (...of the O-zone fame). Touched key points dogging the mind - my mind at least!

1.      Develop a passion and keep the mind engaged. It elevates life from ordinary into the realm of extraordinary

2.      Do you feel your life is repetitive and boring? I can ‘see’ a lot of hands shooting up at the question. Same old, same old… Beyond a point, we get used to everything — yes, even to the most exciting stuff, and life seems to take on a repetitive sameness that threatens to strangle us.

3.       Cyberspace is flooded with people seeking ideas to help pep up their boring lives. Suggestions range from cultivating hobbies, to making new friends, to varying one’s daily activities, or travelling and discovering the world. Of course, the ones who get bored the most are those who do not have to worry about where the next meal is coming from. For, it is only when our most basic needs are met that the mind allows itself the luxury to wander and demand variety.

4.        We envy other people, their lifestyles and jobs, imagining we would be better off if we were in their place. However, the objects of our envy are probably going through the same distressing boredom in their own lives. Travelling, wandering around, seeking out other people to kill boredom are all temporary ways of diverting one’s attention and varying the daily routine. Alcohol and drugs serve to cure depression, numbing the mind in the process rather than stimulating it. Remember, what you are seeking is not forgetfulness, but excitement that lasts and weaves its way into life, to enrich it further.

5.       What you are looking for is not a hangover, but a sprightly morning with an exciting day stretching ahead of you. Rather than having time on your hands, you want it to seem like there isn’t enough time to do all the exciting and useful things you really wish to do.

6.       One way to never get bored is to always be on the move — mentally and physically. Be active and dynamic. Indulge in healthy hobbies, exercise and keep the mental juices flowing. Meet varied groups of friends, interact with people who stimulate your mind, keep physically active. Have dreams and set goals. As soon as you approach one goal, set your sights on the next one. Always have something to look forward to. Keep raising the bar.

7.      The only place you can go to for excitement and for sparking innovation is not outside, but within your mind. The only way to keep life exciting and dynamic is through the mind — thoughts, ideas, innovation, etc. Where else can you find scenarios changing by the minute and enjoy all kinds of experiences without having to actually travel anywhere? Where else but in the mind can your imagination help spark off creative ideas that can change the tenor of your life?

8.      Thoughts are just about the only things that change constantly, keeping the mind forever exciting and excited. And the best fodder for our mind are engaging movies, good books and scintillating conversations — these help us engage with other creative minds, sparking off yet more ideas and excitement in our own lives. There is nothing more exciting than new ideas which keep you moving.

9.      You hear so many people talk about the ‘purpose’ of their lives. What does that mean? Finding the purpose of your life, the reason you live, gives a new meaning to living. It is not for nothing that some of the world’s richest people, such as Warren Buffet and Donald Trump — after making it to the top of the world’s Rich Lists — started giving away their wealth. They believe in helping the lesser privileged and giving back to society. Helping others gives a new meaning to life, leaving us with satisfaction and contentment.

10.      Develop a passion. For eg, one of my friends has varied interests that he has been following parallel to his career all through life. He gathers information, keeps news clippings, reads whatever he can and has become an authority of sorts
on these subjects. Whether or not he takes this any further, the fact remains that his passion has helped make his life richer and given an extra edge and meaning to every day of his life. Passion for something elevates life from the ordinary into the extraordinary realm. Passion gives excitement to life and grants huge success to people. Sachin Tendulkar declared that he would give up cricket if and when he lost his “passion for the game”.

11.      If you perceive life to have a purpose and actively engage in thinking through and fulfilling that purpose, you wouldn’t ever find life boring. The people who don’t get bored are the ones who themselves are not boring, because they have kept their minds active and their passions alive!

Celebrating Life, With Conviction!

*  We are privileged to get to attend a wonder of an event in Delhi called the VSK Baithak - sponsored, coordinated and 'celebrated' by Mr. VS Kapur, a businessman of Gurgaon - where he invites select Hindustani classical players and singers for an exclusive, no frills program.
*   The last time we attended one dad about 6 oud yaar back, when we were in Delhi last.
*   What stands out about the man above is not just his enthusiasm to appreciate good music, or share it amongst like-minded music lovers but also the sheer conviction of steadfastly sticking to giving centrestage to promising youngsters, and over the years, this conviction Hai proved the point completely.
*  Also, the efforts of organising struct classy events, simply for the pleasure of celebrating a passion for music is what I greatly appreciate... Lessons to learn out there, and so the title of this Blog...

What a Musical Bonanza!

Our short trip to Udupi & Coorg had a great ending, what with a chance look @ a non descript advertisement of a SPIC MACAY classical program @ the NIT, Suratkal. After sorting out the major issues of how to reach the location from Mangalore, one realised that an even more bigger issue cropped up - who all will attend the whole-night concert? Rajan & Sajan Mishra duo,Dhrupad by Dagar, Shahid Parvez's Sitar, Venkatesh Kumar vocal. Not to forget some great Mandolin by the prodigal U Srinivas. Finally, the choice was unanimous and simple - only ME! It was heartening to see the huge crowd of attendees tool one saw that it was clearly a case of 'detailment'! However, the event itself was classy! Now only the moonlit hassle of how to return to the hotel @ the unearthly hour of 3 or 4 AM !!

Jaideep's Upanayanam, B'lore...

It was a great rejuvenator to be amidst all the greenery and tranquility of the ITC Residency @ Bengaluru. The quient place is near the erstwhile Jakkur airfield, astride the road to the new airport. We spent the whole day lazying around, checking out the swanky gym, and the pool. There was no going out to town as the chief protagonist, Jaideep, was not permitted to move out after the initial puja...

What a Short Break!

  • ...just back after a week-long stay @ Pachmarhi. We had gone as part of a Summer Camp that was held for children of Bhopal... and were responsible to oversee its conduct.
  • Good chance to take a break from the rush of daily life of Bhopal. Also, a nice chance to be amongst children and get to influence them. It was indeed a challenge to keep them busy for a whole week!
  • The Campfire was nice, with some interesting personalities gracing the occasion. We had Mr. Prakash Jha, the noted film director (in fact, the run-up to inviting him over, we got a chance to view a good hour or so his shooting of his film 'Chakravyuh'!)
  • Also, popular were Abhay Deol and Padmashree Om Puri. Nice fun, overall indeed.

The Search Just Ended...

  • Yipee, the search for the replacement to the work-horse mobile of mine just ended today! Shubhangi and self spent the day on the Malls of Gurgaon the whole day to zero onto the new replacement.
  • I would like HTC to take note of the old customer retainership policy of theirs, as the older HTC (P3400i) will watch a HTC WildFire pickup the next call to me...
  • The search took a lot of time of ours to check out versioning of 2.1 vs 2.2 on the Android that replaces the Windows 6.1 that I had earlier.
  • More later. I am enjoying the short stay @ Delhi till the 24th Nov. Bye for now...

Rejuvenating Short Break...

  • A short break of 3-days can be such an elixir is to be felt to be believed!
  • We went on a un-chartered trip - starting towards Pachmarhi - starting because we had not made any holiday plans till the last min. All Google attempts to search out a nice place in the vicinity proved useless. Thereafter, all the small things(!) like accommodation, living, route etc was done enroute.
  • It was unconventional - like the whole day spent on a rivulet - with Sid and Rishu frolicking in the cold water.
  • Regular visits to the WelcomGroup 'Satpura Retreat' for meals was great. Rishabh took to photography here. We have loads of snaps of chairs, mother-earth and sky; Rishabh's attempt to capture our faces (slightly moved frame there!).
  • Then, a plan to see the Tawa Resort came up. God was kind to get us a shack @ the last minute though it was a Saturday. Nice food, great view, a cruise on the lake - and lo! the spirits soared! Great trip indeed...
